Author Lloyd Jones obviously enjoys Charles Dickens and the novel Great Expectations in particular. Something we don't see too often… a feature film set in Melanesia, with Melanesian actors (plus Hugh Laurie). I think my brother got this for me at Christmas as a bit of a joke based on the name but it's actually an astonishingly beautiful book, possibly the best I've read in the past 18 months. A new film based the novel Mister Pip by New Zealand writer Lloyd Jones has just been released. To my mind, all novels enter into a larger conversation with all the novels that have come before them. But his novel Mister Pip (published 2006) even more celebrates the power of the written word and story in our everyday life. In Shakespeares tragedy Macbeth, and Mister Pip, written by Lloyd Jones, the characters are hungry for power and their own profit, which only results in mixed emotions of guilt and revenge and eventually, their downfall.
